Setbacks

Just before this semester started I was watching the news one night when I saw a story about a rural fire. Someone was burning their trash on a particularly windy day in North Texas which resulted in a grass fire that quickly spread to her neighbors farm. The farmer lost his entire hay harvest from the past summer.

Thousands of dollars, hundreds of hours of work, up in smoke because of the not so bright actions of a neighbor. They showed footage of the farmer frantically trying to salvage some of his crop, but ultimately it was a total loss. When asked how he felt he calmly said, "we have had set backs before, we will probably have them again".

This simple statement has helped me more than you can know as I have started a new job and another semester at DTS. Ever since we have been back in Texas we have had "setbacks". First our job didn't have health insurance or payroll set up, then 1/4 of one of my wisdom teeth fell off, and then right when I began to get settled into my new classes....my MacBook caputzled. Thankfully I had backed up a week before so it hasn't been devastating, but a setback $$$ + muchas horas de trabajar.

Thinking of that farmer has helped me through all of this. My losses have been miniscule compared to what he lost. Setbacks are a part of life. I have had setbacks before, I will have them again. One thing I can be certain of.. Christ will see me through all of my setbacks.

Hey, Andy, it is wonderful how you are able to get things into perspective. I love that picture of the farmer on your blog. He looks like the people who lived through the dust bowl days when life was impossibly hard. You are always going to do great if you can keep thinking things through the way you do. Did you get some help for that wisdom tooth?
